Founder & lead consultant

Joey Smith

“Memory is not an operating plan.”

I started Sentinel Opus because service businesses often need something more practical than a surface-level website and less bloated than a full agency engagement.

My background shaped the way I work. Navy service taught me that systems need records, ownership, and clear responsibility because memory is not an operating plan.

Information technology gave me the technical judgment to make better decisions about structure, dependencies, access, maintainability, and the trade-offs behind simple-looking choices.

That combination shapes our work across websites, business workflows, technical operations and knowledge systems: understand the problem, agree on the plan, explain the decisions and leave the client with usable documentation and clear ownership.

Based in Texas, Sentinel Opus works remotely with businesses in Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia and elsewhere in the United States. How remote engagements work.

Working principles

Built to be used after it is delivered.

A written plan before any work starts

Every project begins with a clear, written description of what gets built, reviewed and agreed before anything is built.

Guidance is part of what you receive

Decisions made during the project, access notes, content guidance, and next steps are included in delivery, not treated as leftovers.

Security-minded choices

Passwords, integrations, third-party tools, and public-facing details are chosen and handled carefully throughout the project.

Built to last, not to impress

Technical choices favor sites that are easy to update, understand, and hand to another maintainer, not effects that show off for their own sake.

Honest about what fits

Projects are taken on when the current services can deliver them well. If it is not the right fit, you will hear that directly.
